Belfast Confetti; Story

The story of Belfast confetti is about the result of an IRA bomb attack. However the poem is about an inconclusive character that was most probably at the wrong place at the wrong time. To support this statement; “I know this labyrinth so well” this quote implies that he must be a local observer rather than the verdict. The poem also brings an effect of confusion as the character knows the area so well however every road, side path, back street, alley way is blocked off and then the characters desperation and confusion appears when he asks “Why can’t I escape?”.

The poem also has reoccurring links towards linguistics such as “raining exclamation marks” this meaning people were shouting however the reason for this is the increase of confusion that emits from the character and explains exactly what he is thinking however not so clear at first.

This is a great first interpretation of the poem. The notion of it being the voice of a local, the idea of confusion and the technique of connection to language structure are all key elements in the poem.

Soon you will be able to explore the underlying effect of these features and expand on your interpretation.
