H/W preparation for controlled assessment; list points from classwork and categorize their features.

1. Text is limited compared to spoken language, so therefore people have been created features to imitate the impressions of what happens inside a spoken conversation. For example;

Smilies 🙂 are paralinguistic features that imitate facial features and facial features imply emotion, 🙂 🙁

Asterisk *facepalm* (paralinguistic feature) is used to substitute the movement of the character you are talking to, a set of stage directions.

IM WRITING IN CAPITAL LETTERS BECAUSE IM ANGRY!!!!!!! People use capital letters to indicate shouting or anger, this is a more eye catching piece of text on the page because it stands out from the rest of the page. (paralinguistic feature)

2. Spoken language has a variety of creative features. For example;

Dialect (speaking attributes) whats up fam, so in this one phrase we have “fam” which is short for family and is usually said to people that the person cares about as family is signified as love and care, so he treats this person as family so why not give them the name of bruv which is a synonym inside the context of this dialect.

Accent, (speaking attribute) people talk in accents in different locations and these can be accents for the media or to fit into their local group. These accents could be used to individualize certain social groups and show them from the crowd.

3. Spoken language is beginning to be influenced by text communication;

People are starting to use lol (initilism) inside spoken language, this is because lol is a very standardized initilism and means laugh out loud, people have been using this to signify that the comment they said was funny or they thought a comment was funny but was not so funny that they would laugh about it, so it could be said as an indication of humour.

This is the same concept for YOLO, however people use YOLO (initilism) as a scape goat to do whatever they want really.

    This works well, Soren. It will provide you with a good basis for tomorrow’s work. I will be asking for you to add another paragraph on the value or benefit of these subtle shifts in meaning caused by the use of the devices you describe, as well as a paragraph that explores the social effect of these language forms.

    If you haven’t already, have a look at this exemplar of work from a student from last year to get an idea of what the final piece you write could contain:

    Keep in mind that the question is about creativity. Thus I would start thinking about the depth and inventiveness that people put to this language.

    (yolo is interesting because I think it works in speech also because it sounds so distinctive – this is worth mentioning)
